 POST-OP CARE

Here are some helpful tips to increase the recovery process after major treatment.  Extractions, Root Canals, and Tooth Whitening are notorious for causing discomfort.  Be sure to take the recommended prescriptions from the doctor.  They are for your own good and increase the success of treatment.

The proper care following oral surgical procedures will hasten recovery and prevent complications.  Remember that a tooth or multiple teeth have been removed.  Some bone and gum tissue has also been altered.

After an Extraction:

1. DO NOT RINSE MOUTH TODAY. Tomorrow, rinse mouth gently every 3-4 hours (especially after meals) using one-quarter teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water.  Continue rinses for several days.

2. BLEEDING. Following extractions, some bleeding is to be expected.  If persistent bleeding occurs, place gauze pads over bleeding area and bite down firmly for one-half hour.  Repeat if necessary.

3. SWELLING. Ice bag or chopped ice wrapped in a  towel should be applied to operated area one-half hour on and one-half hour off for 4-5 hours.

4. PAIN. For mild to average pain use any non-aspirin-type of medication you like. Expect pain and post-operative discomfort for up to a week.

5. FOOD. Light diet is advisable during the first 24 hours.  Avoid crunchy foods (chips, crackers, etc.), that can get trapped easily in the sockets, for a few days after the surgery.

6. BONY EDGES. Small sharp bone fragments may work up through the gums during healing.  These are not roots; if annoying, return to the office for their simple removal.

Root Canal Therapy:

1. DO NOT CHEW ON THAT SIDE.  Wait at least 48 hours to return to normal chewing on the side you received the root canal.

2. PAIN.  Expect pain and post-operative discomfort for up to a week.  This can vary from patient to patient depending on the size of the infection you originally presented with.

3. MEDICATION.  It is important that you continue the use of the medication prescribed, as they usually include an antibiotic that decreases the rest of the infection.

4. SWELLING. Ice bag or chopped ice wrapped in a  towel should be applied to operated area one-half hour on and one-half hour off for 4-5 hours.  Swelling is normal following root canals.

5. RETURN.  A crown is often necessary to ensure success of a root canal, be sure to check with your doctor if you do not have a next visit appointment.

Whitening:

1.  PAIN.  Teeth can be very sensitive for up to 3 days following 1 hour ZOOM Whitening.  Prevent the consumption of extreme temperature foods and beverages.  Be sure to rest comfortably without breathing through the mouth, talking, or eating much for the following 12 hours.  Some people experience no discomfort at all.

2. HIGH FLOURIDE TOOTHPASTE.  Be sure to continue to use the high-flouride toothpaste provided to you for at least one week after treatment.  This will continue to help strengthen your teeth.
